Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Donald A. Player, of Lynbrook, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and retired NYPD Detective Sergeant, passed away on August 22, 2024 in Rockville Centre, NY. Born to Arthur and Helen Player in 1942, he was a proud son of Inwood. Donny’s life was marked by his unwavering commitment to his family and community, and a knack for surviving close calls. His love for his wife Cathy was boundless; sharing a bond that transcended the detective’s long hours at work. Together they raised three wonderful daughters: Sue (Andy Vuono), Sandy (Joe Carroll), and Stacy. He found immense joy in being a father and later a very playful grandfather to Regan, Quinn, John, and Lindsay. As a US Army Military Policeman, he served with 524th MP Company in Hawaii, beginning his long career in law enforcement. His decades long NYPD career was a more deep vocation than just a mere occupation, and reflected his commitment to serving others and his dedication to seeking justice. Including tours in the toughest neighborhoods of Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. A proud, longtime, and decorated Brooklyn South Homicide Detective Sergeant before retiring honorably; Donald's dedication to fellow officers and the citizens of NYC were his pillars. Outside of work, Donald cherished spending time with his family and grandchildren who brought him deep happiness. He also had strong connections within Lynbrook through the Vulcan Firehouse where service, laughter, and friendships grew. In addition to these commitments, he loved the Broadway Golf Club, golfing, dining out, relaxing at Sun & Surf Beach Club (G-8), baseball, and following his beloved NY Mets. He often began anticipating and counting down the days until pitchers and catchers reported as early as mid-October. Donny will be remembered for his loyalty and willingness to help neighbors and friends, making them feel like close family. He leaves behind countless friends whose lives have been enriched by knowing him - from colleagues on the job to fellow club members who appreciated his no-drama and tell-it-like-it-is candor. The loss of Donny is deeply felt by all who knew him; however, his impact will continue to live on through memories shared among us fortunate enough to have known him. The family will receive friends on Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Perry Funeral Home Inc. 118 Union Avenue Lynbrook, NY 11563. Funeral Mass Monday 9:45 AM at St. Raymond’s RC Church in East Rockaway. Interment in Queen of Peace Cemetery Old Westbury, NY.
