Obituary of Marie Papania

Marie Papania, beloved mother, grandmother and friend passed away March 24, 2022. Born Maria Cianflone on July 19, 1930 in Amato, Italy to Raffael A. Cianflone and Concetta Cianflone née Gagliardi. In 1947, she and her mother immigrated to the United States, joining her father, who preceded them, in Detroit, Michigan. She found her way to New York City and studied to be a Cosmetologist. In 1957, she married Bartley Papania. She gave birth to two daughters, Anne (1958) and Denise (1960). In 1964, the Papania family moved from Brooklyn to Valley Stream, Long Island. She gave birth to another daughter, Lisa (1966) Marie loved to cook and took pleasure in feeding her family and friends. She loved to socialize. In her 80’s she began creating lovely artwork, mostly vibrant, quirky, floral scenes. She was courageous and unafraid to examine the human psyche and herself. Deprivation and hardship, when young, compelled her to feel empathy and concern for those suffering. She, of course, would want to feed you and listen with her heart. We will miss her.
