Lorraine was our neighbor on 182nd Street, where I grew up. She was the friend next door that my family and I would see all the time. Lorraine was kind, thoughtful, and consistent. When I reflect on community and neighborhood and what I want them to be, I think of Lorraine as a positive force for both. I'm happy that I saw her in August and a few years back with my husband. It will be difficult to return to 182nd and know that she is not around. I am grateful to have reconnected with her recently. I am grateful for all the years that she was my neighbor.

To the family of dear, dear Lorraine,
I feel so incredibly fortune to have known Lorraine. She was, indeed, one of the most thoughtful, loving and giving human beings I have ever met. She came to my wedding when I married my dear wife Wanda 7 years ago. We had close to two hundred people at our reception, and somehow she ended up sitting at the wrong table. She never said word! When Wanda and I made our rounds to speak to all of our family and friends I realized that she was sitting with some of my family members and not with Yvette, Cindy and all the other members of the Butch/Femme Society. I apologized for the mix up and asked her if she wanted to move. And being the gracious person she was, she said, "Oh no! I'm having a great time right here.!" My family embraced her IMMEDIATELY. Just as everyone else whose lives she touched embraced her. Rest in Peace Lorraine. I know you will because you were an amazing woman here so I KNOW you'll be no different for eternity.
With love and much affection,
Janet and Wanda Gino

Dear Family and Friends of Lorraine,
Maria and I wish to extend to you all our sincerest regrets for the passing of Lorraine, who we came to know as a
very kind and caring woman.Lorraine, in spite of her own health problems caringly reached out to Maria to suggest some solutions for Maria's health problems.
We will miss her quiet, kind presence at our meetings at St. Francis Xavier too,
Lorraine also was a kind person whose care for stray cats touched our hearts as well.
So we will miss you Lorraine but know you are with God in the highest place in Heaven.

For Lorraine . . .
Friday, October 20, 2017
With love, Steph
Lorraine loved Ah-nold. Mahler. Patti Page and Patsy Kline. One of her favorite movies of all time was The Crying Game.
Lorraine loved her mom and dad, Helen and Henry Tobin, her sister, Midge, and her brother-in-law, John Stancarone. She even loved her estranged brother, Joe, and his wife and sons, though she could never reestablish contact.
Lorraine took care of her mother, her sister and her brother-in-law at different stages in her life, mostly toward the end of theirs. After they passed, Lorraine had no one else to care for, really, except herself . . . and that wasn't enough to keep her here.
She loved Tina, her niece; Johnny, Katie and Tommy, her great nephews and great niece, and Johnny's and Katie's spouses, Liz and John. We are so sorry for your loss. She loved her friends Diane Blount, Karen Bronstein, Martha Lage and Kevin Bain. She loved the church ladies from Catholic Lesbians at St. Francis Xavier. She loved Yvette Schneider and the women from the Butch/Femme Society, of which she was a longtime member. You are here, and I may not have named you, but Lorraine loved you.
James and Giovanna, her great-great nephew and great-great niece kept her on her toes and gave her such delight! She loved her neighbors in Springfield Gardens, Michelle and Fred, Lori, Michelle, Nicole and their mother, Mr. Addy, and so many others I don't know the names of. She loved her parish, Christ the King, and its faith community. One priest noted: "The institutional church may not have been good to her, but she was the most faithful of servants." I am so sorry for our loss.
Lorraine loved God, Mary, Jesus. She did not love the Donald! But she did love her cats, Lenny and Spanky, and the multitude she fed outside. She donated her hard-earned money as a phys ed teacher in the New York City public school system to countless charitable organizations because her heart was big--as big as the space/time she now inhabits . . . eternity.
I am not going to recount the experiences I shared with Lorraine up here. Because those sweet, rich memories are here [indicate heart]. I know you have them too. I will say that we were together as a couple for six-and-a-half years and friends for twenty-one-and-half years more. Six of my seven nieces and nephews love their Aunt Lorraine like no other. The youngest did not know her, but I know she would have taken to Aunt Lorraine too! My four siblings hold her with the fondest of affection. And my parents recognize the goodness of this woman even to this day. She is ohana, family.
And as long as we "talk story," as we say in Hawaii, and invoke Lorraine's name, she is alive. She certainly is well, though that may be hard to understand as we grieve, cry, ache, mourn.
But, you know, Lorraine is worth all the tears we shed over her. She, more than a lot of folks, deserves our "drowning in sorrow."
Lorraine Bernadette Agnes (her confirmation name) Nelson: daughter of Helen and Henry Tobin; sister of Midge and Joe; aunt to Tina, Johnny, Katie, Tommy, James and Giovanna; friend of ours. She is with God now. She is one of the saints we can pray to. She is a part of the great I AM.
We love you, Ms. Nelson! We love you. Moe me ka maluhia. Rest now in peace, my friend.

Lorraine's wings were always visible. Now may they allow her to leave the bonds of this world to soar free. Go with grace Beautiful Lady. So blessed to have witnessed your love for Ryan and Lloyd, but more importantly for my beloved sister Steph for whom we owe gratitude for bringing you into our "ohana"-family; no one left behind. May "aloha"-love, be with you always.
