Obituary of Alfred Francis Kennel

ALFRED FRANCIS KENNEL
Alfred F. Kennel, 95, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2023 at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ. He was born July 9, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY, son of Frank W. Kennel and Mildred Rigby Kennel. Following graduation from High School, Alfred served in the United States Marine Corps. After military service, Alfred worked for New York Life and subsequently worked as an Engineer for the NY Telephone Company, from which he retired. Alfred was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served a term as Grand Knight.
He married Helen Bayer on November 15, 1952. They lived in Richmond Hill, Queens, NY in the Parish of Holy Child Jesus Church, and raised four daughters. Alfred took his family on trips to many local attractions throughout the years, and for two weeks every summer, the family went to Loon Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. After retirement, Alfred and Helen moved to Chestertown, NY in the Adirondack Park, where they enjoyed taking long boat rides on Loon Lake in the summer, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Alfred joined the Chestertown Rotary and did volunteer work for Meals on Wheels. He helped to upgrade the Chestertown Municipal Center/Library and acted in the local community plays. During retirement, he enjoyed traveling to places such as Germany, California and Alaska. He eventually moved to an Adult Community in Columbus, NJ and joined in many of the activities there, including pool volleyball. Most recently, Alfred was a resident of the Allendale Community for Senior Living in Allendale, NJ.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Helen and a grandson, Brian. Surviving are his four daughters, Elizabeth Casterlin (Jerry) of Loris, SC; Marion Kennel (Charlie Gutierrez) of Homosassa, FL; Janet Amato, (Richard) of Lynbrook, NY and Teresa Caputi (Jeffrey) of Ramsey, NJ. Also surviving are five grandchildren (Jeanine, Steven, Matthew, Marcie and Russell), seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A wake will be held on December 13, 2023, from 4 pm to 8 pm at Perry Funeral Home in Lynbrook, NY and a funeral service on Thursday morning at 12 pm in the chapel at St. Charles’ Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY. Interment will immediately follow the service.
