Please share a memory of Nina to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Nina C. Herbert
Nina Caroline Herbert, peacefully departed her loving family on October 22, 2023 in Lynbrook, New York. She loved to be called “Ni” by her identical twin sister, Gloria “aka” Glor.
Nina was born at home along with her twin sister, Gloria in Inwood, New York on August 4, 1936. Parents: Nina Redicenta, Maria, Rosaida Tocci & Fred Kerber Sr. who was born in Worms, Germany.
Mother to three daughters Karen, Lynne and Kristen. Nina raised her young family beginning in East Rockaway, West Islip then landing in Lake Grove, New York where they moved to live near Peter Iglio, Nina’s sisters late husband and our father’s best friend forever. Nina moved down to sunny Florida with her husband Harold (Steve) Vincent Herbert “aka” Skippy and children in the early ‘80’s where they resided for over of 40 + years.
Nina was a highly regarded in her educational communities and taught for over 45 years in total. She was well known for her dedication to the profession and impacted many lives; forging many close friendships and maintained them throughout her life. Her career began at Saint Joseph’s Catholic school on Long Island then transferred to Bradenton, Florida where she taught as well for many years at Saint Joseph’s on 26th Street West mid-way in her career then found herself and stayed until her retirement at Able Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida. Her hobbies included many years of a fun bowling league with fellow teachers and co-workers, socializing and outings with her special circle of friends, loved planning nights out at the movies and lots of dining out with her beloved husband and family. Very committed to her catholic faith, often never missing a mass even on vacation despite dad saying the obligation was “waived” when traveling. Our family parish (where she and our father were married) is and remains Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Sarasota, Florida. Nina was most proud of her academic achievements having been one of the first in the family to earn her master’s degree, going back to school while holding down a full time teaching job and managing full time family life while living in Lake Grove. Nina’s undergraduate studies were completed at in New York city and went on to complete her master’s in education from Stony Brook University.
She is survived by her three daughters, Karen Campbell , Lynne Herbert, and Kristen M. Beury. Grandchildren Robert Clayton Campbell, Charles Stephane Messal. Nephews, Robert, Steven and Chris Scianimanico, Fred III, Keith and Michael Kerber, William, Andrew and Daniel Herbert, Peter and Thomas Iglio as well as her niece, Cami Ellen Negus and the late Allison Kerber.
