Obituary of Nanette Cinque Jimenez

They say that you should celebrate every occasion, every important milestone, every Birthday… When it came to Nanny… we never needed a reason. She never needed an excuse. She was always ready… with a costume, a silly dance or a bag of tricks and treats. She elevated, enhanced and lifted everything she did and everyone she knew. Her energy, beauty and childlike enthusiasm made it impossible not to want to be with her. She took up all the space in a room in the best sense of the expression. She could take an excruciatingly boring event… and turn it into the best and most memorable part of your whole year. She could wield an awkward or frustrating interaction with another person into a comically genius story that would leave you crying from laughter, and begging for her to tell it again and again. Nettie had the same quality. You can’t teach it, you can’t obtain it. It comes from an organic and natural joy. It’s a tickle from within. Like a child being tickled so hard they cry from laughter. She was mischievous, exciting, and beautifully unique. Those were her gifts to us, and she passed them around everyday because she had so much to spare. We were all lucky to be mere stars in her orbit. In her incredibly brave battle the past year, Nan defied odds, carried on with dignity and inspired all of us to never give up. Despite extreme pockets of darkness, she found light and laughter around every turn. Nan’s physical body isn’t with us anymore but that doesn’t mean that her gifts are gone. Her gorgeous spirit will live on in us forever and we ask that everyone keep it alive and bring her along wherever you go.
