My deepest condolences to my friend Joann’s family. She was a gem of a woman indeed and she will be sorely missed.
I first met Joann soon after a fire had destroyed her home, leaving her scarred and causing her the loss of her youngest son. Even then, her faith knew no bounds, She picked herself up, became involved in her parish church of St Joseph, becoming the best lector there ever was. It was she who introduced me to the Magnificat and its daily meditations, In fact she bought me a six-month subscription to the liturgical publication.
Joann and I and several other women became known as the Card Ladies. Not only did we meet at least once a month at each other’s homes to play cards, but we also attended several social functions where you could be sure Joann would be ready to give us single ladies a twirl on the dance floor.
After her cancer diagnosis she put on a brave front, carrying on with the daily rituals of life and even driving herself to her chemo sessions.

The last time I saw her in person was when, as per her instructions, I proceeded to her back door to drop off some supplies and there she was, sitting at the table, having her breakfast. She was fully dressed, no nightgown and robe for her, complete with jewelry. She and I sat there, fascinated, as the early morning sunlight shone on a crystal bauble that hung in the window, throwing a rainbow of colors on our faces and skin. Joann explained that that crystal was her husband Joe’s last present to her. He was in hospital when he told her he dad ordered something special for her. Her face shone as she said this.
Dear Joann, you are now reunited with Joe and with your son. From your lofty position with the angels, I am sure you are watching over your children, your grandchildren, your siblings and us, your dear friends.
