Dear family:
We were just stunned to learn of Miriam's passing during this holiday season.
We met Miriam over 25 years ago by suggestion of someone helping us find a long-coated Akita puppy. That first meeting in her home in East Rockway, NY became a friendship and deep love and respect of the Akita breed. Miriam was a wealth of information but it wasn't all just the knowledge she gave. Miriam and Steve became family with each pup they placed in the new owner's hands, and we've had two of their pups: Callie and Max. It's been a while since we owned a Miru Akita pup and we do miss them. During one of our last emails, Miriam shared that she brought a male, black, long coat, "Midnight", over from Finland and that he earned quite a following of admirers throughout her neighbors.
We will miss Miriam very much and please know that she is forever with the many pups that have gone before her, including Callie and Max. We hold them all very dear to our hearts.
With love,
Patty & Ron Rhodes
Hillsborough, NJ

Mir was a very special person and such a wonderful friend to me. She was a wealth of knowledge and we spoke every day pretty much for the past 7 years. Her stories were so amazing that I saved every one. I am devastated and I will miss her so much.
Till we meet again….

Miriam was truly one of a kind. We met at a dog show and at first meeting, she took me under her wing and became a true friend. We have been friends now for 30 years, with Miriam and Steve becoming a part of my family. Through this friendship she introduced me to the world of health information tech, and (literally) pushed me into my career where I have flourished under her watch and guidance. I will miss our long telephone conversations and hearing of her many travels and interesting stories. If I hadn't chosen to sit in the Akita ring at that first show, I don't know where my life would be, but God puts people in places for a reason. Miriam said "sit here with me, no one will bother you" and the rest is history. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

Miriam was always willing to share her knowledge, and her love of Akitas. I enjoyed talking with her about the old dogs, as she knew so many of them, and their owners and handlers. She was a wealth of information, but she was also a kind and giving woman. Where Miriam was, Steve was too. They came as a package deal, and I learned to appreciate their closeness. If Miriam didn't know something, Steve probably did. We hadn't talked much recently, but knowing that I no longer have the option to pick up the phone and call her, or send an email that she will quickly respond to, makes the world a bit emptier tonight. Steve, I'm so sorry for your loss, but please know it's a loss many people will feel.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Miriam was a firecracker. I enjoyed my phone conversations with her each and every time. When she was chair of ways and means, she made me laugh with her stories.
