There are a few individuals I grew up going to mandir with that turned into family. One of those people happened to be Aunty Premwati Julie Misir.
Being the 7 year old I was, I was super nervous to sing a bhajan in temple. One of those people that motivated and never gave up on me was Aunty Premwati. She wholeheartedly supported me to the end.
During my childhood, aunty Premwati would have me playing harmonium constantly and even if I messed up on the scales, she never discouraged me. She bought me cd’s of people I loved listening to. She went out of her way writing out Sanskrit bhajans in English encouraging me to sing her compositions and the Ramayan Chaupai’s and Sumiran (...some of them I have yet to work on lol). What strengthened our relationship with her was when my father found out that in Guyana, she was a great friend to our family for years through his elder brother (George and Pinky).
Her voice... will never be forgotten. She lived a life filled with immense devotion and travel. I consider myself blessed to be in her presence hearing so many stories from her earlier days when she was in Guyana, to her studying in India and here in NY. She had a sharp intellect and was ALWAYS on the go. I asked God, “Why her?”. But I know that there’s a better plan for her.
Every time I visited MLM, I felt so welcomed seeing her and Pandit Bisnauth’s face. They stayed there til the end.
With tears in our eyes and a heavy heart, her inspiration will definitely live on. She’ll deeply be missed (her scratchity-ness and how hilarious she was too lol). She was a sweet personality to my family and will always be remembered. She’s now with her Krishna.
May her soul Rest In Peace. My condolences to her immediate family, temple family and those whose lives she has touched throughout the years.

I will always remember being babysat by my grandmother as a small child. I had a lot of fun there. I did not get to see her as much after she moved to New York. I'm very grateful for the time we had to see each other this summer. I know she is in a better place now.
