Obituary of Christina I Christou

Christina Christou, 82, passed away gracefully at home on February 22, 2021, surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren. Christina was a devoted wife to her husband, Athanasis, who she joins in the Kingdom of Heaven. Known as “Yia Yia” to her grandchildren and “Grand Yia Yia” to her great grandchildren, Christina was a loving and adored mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Born on the Dingle Peninsula in the small town of Dingle, Ireland, Christina lived amongst the backdrop of rolling greens and sandy beaches, experiencing a humble childhood, yet full of adventure. Christina eventually built a loving home in Hewlett, New York, where she was well-known by all of her neighbors and friends as the most jovial woman on the block. Christina had a passion for traveling, visiting dozens of countries all over the world with her late husband, as well as exploring all 50 US States. She was also an avid baker, who’s recipes will live on in her family for generations to come, especially her award-winning soda bread. She was known for her quick wit, room-filling laughter, and an appreciation for all aspects of life. She was a spiritual and romantic woman, joining her husband at weekly mass in a Greek Orthodox Cathedral, eventually converting after years of devotion to the religion. Her spirit is carried on by her four children, Michael, Nick, Maria and Helen, as well as three sisters, 11 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 24, at Saint Paul’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 10 o’clock a.m. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations in Christina's name to St. Paul Greek Orthodox Cathedral 110 Cathedral Ave., Hempstead, NY 11550
