Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John R. Steppan, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away on January 24, 2014. He was born on February 2, 1919 to Edward and Karoline in Gottschee, Austria. John came to America in 1927. He grew up in Nassau County and graduated with honors from Hempstead High School. John served in WWII in Europe and Africa from 1941 to 1945. He was proud of his service, attended most of his unit reunions, and outlived most of his peers. John gave four years of his youth to serve our country and it shaped his life and character. John was the long-time owner of InterCounty Building Materials in Inwood. He enjoyed tennis, dancing, woodworking, jewelry making, house projects, and reading. John is survived by his wife Rose, his children: James, David, and Claire, and his grandchildren: Carla, Julia, Jamie, Ruth, Samuel, and Elise. John was an active member of the church, served on the church council, and often helped with maintenance of the church. In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in Cedarhurst
